Tyshawn Jones has one thing a dwindling variety of skilled skate boarders can declare: a signature shoe.
Not that way back, any professional who was remotely marketable signed a footwear deal that included an authentic silhouette bearing their title. The footwear these contracts yielded would run for a few seasons earlier than new fashions changed them. And so the cycle went.
However now, even the highest-profile execs—skaters who launch influential video components, skaters who win contests—usually tend to get colorways of present fashions, typically ones that belong to different execs. It’s much less dangerous for a sponsor, certain, but in addition much less of a milestone.
Jones is nicely conscious of the shift.
“Lots of people aren’t getting footwear as of late,” the 22-year-old Bronx native says, “so I’m very grateful to be one of many few who truly does.”
This month noticed the discharge of the Tyshawn Low, the second iteration of Jones’ signature mannequin with Adidas Skateboarding. The primary, a basketball-inspired, cup-sole mid, arrived in June 2019, about six months after Thrasher named him 2018’s Skater of the Year. The award owed largely to his half in Blessed, a video launched by one other considered one of his sponsors, Supreme.
Jones’ new sneaker is a cut-down model of the primary, one thing he mentioned he’d deliberate from the start. And whereas it arrived and not using a formal half to assist it, Jones doesn’t really feel pressured to supply one, preferring common Instagram clips filmed with a buddy as an alternative. “I feel that all the time exhibits the most effective end result.”
We spoke to Jones about his shoe, his video components, and why he doesn’t truly watch skate movies himself.
