Kenny Bednarek shall be bringing again a fairly nice memento from his first Olympics.
The Rice Lake monitor and area star took the silver medal Wednesday within the 200 meters on the Tokyo Olympics, operating a personal-best time of 19.68 seconds and ending simply shy of Canada’s Andre De Grasse (19.62) for the gold medal.
Bednarek, 22, who lit up Memorial Stadium in La Crosse throughout his performances on the WIAA monitor and area state meet, gained his quarterfinal warmth and took second behind De Grasse in Tuesday’s semifinal. Now, he is an Olympic medalist.
He was lined up in opposition to two higher-profile Individuals, together with reigning world champion and U.S. Olympic Trials champion Noah Lyles (bronze in 19.74 seconds) and 17-year-old Erriyon Knighton (fourth place in 19.93 seconds), the youngest American man competing in track and field at the Olympics since Jim Ryun in 1964.

Bednarek, who ran for Indian Hills Group School in Ottumwa, Iowa, and turned professional in 2019, owns the WIAA Division 2 information within the 100 (10.42 seconds), 200 (20.43) and 400 (46.73), all set in 2018. The 200 and 400 instances are the most effective in any division, with the 200 time simply forward of the 1998 race put in by Bradley Tech and future NFL operating again Michael Bennett (20.68).
Bednarek’s the second Wisconsinite to medal on the 2020 Olympics, becoming a member of Waterford’s Madelynn Bernau, 23, who notched bronze in mixed trapshooting.
Lyles held the early lead within the 200, however Bednarek and De Grasse, operating side-by-side in lanes 7 and 6, respectively, surged forward from there.
